THE ORGIN OF GOALS
I was raised in a loving and nurturing environment. A positive attitude was always the focus, and the words "no", "not", "never" and "can't" rarely escaped my mouth. For the past 30 years my father has worked as a stress management professor. He consistently brought a holistic approach to parenting. When big decisions needed to be made, my dad would often say something to this
effect, "how will this decision affect you, those around you, and does it bring you closer to an overall goal." My mother was a phenomenal physical education teacher who tended to look at big decisions from a more analytical eye. When my life came to a junction and I needed to make a difficult decision, my mom would often say something to this effect, "have you thought about all the details yet? Is it financially a good decision? Will you have enough time?" She constantly asked the questions that I did not want to hear, but needed an answer. No matter what, both of my parents instilled a fire and passion inside of me which has propelled me to believe that anything is possible with the right drive.
As I matured, my family slowly began offering advice only when asked for, and because I valued their opinion, it was quite frequent. The more I asked, the more I seemed to know what their responses would be. I soon realized, when big decisions arose, the uncertainty that used to accompany them was gone. My decision making process was clear and my actions were successful.
The summer before my final year of college, I was in my living room, watching some mindless TV program when I had an epiphany. At that mom
ent I thought, "how would watching TV better me as a person, help me reach a goal, or fulfill a physiological need?" It would not! I got up, put on my running shoes and ran 10 miles. Never in my life had I felt so inspired yet let down. So much time and energy had been wasted on meaningless tasks. I realized that my life was going to change dramatically, and the thought of change was extremely exciting. It was on the run that I came up with the acronym GOALS, which stands for Goal Oriented Actions Lead to Success.

"The man on the mountain was now me, and all of my dreams could come true with this simple driving life force."
